clara's web page

having a backup domain

tl;dr: This web page is now also available under cve.undeci.de.

background

Around 1.5 months ago, A/I lost their domain due to US sanctions. As a reaction to this, I asked myself the question on how I can make my own site more resilient as a preventive measurement.

While this page is already available as an onion service and under an in-addr.arpa domain, I consider these two addresses primarily as fallbacks and potentially volatile. Even though onion services are a stable technology, I would like myself to reserve the right to do key rotations every now and then, leading to a new onion service address as a consequence of this.

Because of this, I decided to register a secondary domain under which this web page will be available long-term, especially in the case that something happens to cve.cx.

criteria for a secondary domain

Below is the list of criteria I set myself for registering a secondary domain.

  • Must be a ccTLD managed outside of the US, as they have lowest likelihood of being deleted and/or transferred to a US entity.
  • Must be related to a country whose existence is not threatened by climate change. It really sucks having to keep this in mind, but given the fact that climate change will most likely eradicate various island nations from the world map in the coming decades, I do not want to use a ccTLD that might be deleted from the root zone in a few years/decades from now on.
  • Must be related to a country I have some sort of association/affiliation with, in the case that the registration requirements get tightened at one point. Effectively, this only leaves .de for me, as I have citizenship and (for now) residency in this country.
I have to admit, that I am slightly unsure about .eu, given that many UK folks lost their domains as a consequence of the brexit. Unfortunately, given the rise of fascism, the chances of Germany leaving the EU are not zero. On the other hand, I will probably already have left Germany if this ever becomes a serious topic of discussion.
  • Must be hosted separately from my other domains. This means it is not registered at Porkbun, but rather at INWX, a Germany-based domain registrar. Likewise, the name servers are not hosted on my own, but at my friends over at Project SERVFAIL. Thank You.

domains continue to suck

These criteria may not provide what I am aiming for. For example, Montenegro blocked t.me following US sanctions in July 2026, showing how centralized the domain name system is, regardless of all of this.

In an ideal world, IANA and ICANN would not be US-based entities but rather international organizations created by an international treaty, similar to the WHO or the ITU.

my solution

I originally thought about going with clarawr.de, but ultimately decided for cve.undeci.de.
